Laced with exquisite beauty and surrounded by the scenic expanse of Wular, the famous freshwater lake, Government Degree College Ajas is a new cradle of higher learning. Established in February 2019, the college has since been playing a pivotal role in the field of higher education. It is located in Ajas, a tehsil of District Bandipora, approximately forty kilometres from Srinagar and sixteen kilometres from Bandipora, thus occupying a central position on the Srinagar Bandipora National Highway. This location enables Government Degree College Ajas to cater to the higher education needs of the adjoining areas.

Since its inception, the college has been functioning at the Government Higher Secondary School Ajas on a makeshift arrangement. At present, the college has three single storey prefabricated huts conducive to learning. The institution houses a library facility with more than five thousand quality books and a reading room that offers students a quiet space to prepare material for their respective projects. One prefabricated hut accommodates the Principal’s Chamber, office, and staff room, while another has been converted into classrooms with a capacity of more than one hundred students each. A fully digitised conference room with a smart classroom panel has been made available for academic and co-curricular activities, with a browsing centre cum computer laboratory adjoining it. All classrooms are fully Wi Fi enabled with smart classroom panels installed. The college is equipped with the latest technology as part of its continuing endeavour to provide quality education and to meet the students’ needs in today’s technology driven world.

Academic Programmes and Student Enrolment

Though the college is modest in terms of infrastructure, it has been able to enlighten hundreds of students enrolled across different semesters. Currently, the college offers courses in Social Sciences and Humanities with combinations in Education, English Literature, History, Political Science, Sociology, and Urdu Literature.

Proposed Future of the College

In the infrastructure domain, the College has received approval for the construction of the college building at the main campus. With the support of the Higher Education Department, the college has completed several important tasks to initiate the construction process. A total land area of fifty kanals has been allotted to the college, and various departmental visits and inspections have been conducted from time to time to ensure steady progress.

Work at the main campus has already begun, with three prefabricated huts nearing completion, staff quarters under construction, and a chowkidar hut also being built. Administrative approval for the main building has been accorded at an estimated cost of fourteen hundred lakhs, and construction work is expected to commence shortly. Chain link fencing of the campus, measuring two thousand running feet, has been completed, while the remaining six thousand running feet is still pending approval.

The main highlights of the proposed college infrastructure are:

Smart classrooms with digital panels installed

Fully Wi Fi enabled broadband system

 Digitally equipped conference room

Fully digital computer laboratory cum browsing centre
